Rocky Bleier played as a running back for the Pittsburgh Steelers from 1968 and 1970–1980. Despite suffering severe injuries during his military service in Vietnam, he made a remarkable comeback to professional football. His resilience led him to become a four-time Super Bowl champion (IX, X, XIII, XIV). He was also honored with the George Halas Award (1975) and inducted into the Pittsburgh Steelers Hall of Honor. His contributions to the sport earned him a place in the International Sports Hall of Fame (2019) and the NCAA Inspiration Award (2020).
Beyond his football career, Bleier served in the United States Army from 1968 to 1970 during the Vietnam War. He was assigned to Company C, 4th Battalion (Light), 31st Infantry Regiment, 196th Light Infantry Brigade, Americal Division. While serving as a squad grenadier, he was wounded in action in Hiep Duc, Vietnam, on August 20, 1969. He sustained injuries from an enemy rifle round and grenade explosion, which led to the loss of part of his right foot. Despite being told he would never play football again, Bleier defied expectations and returned to the NFL. For his bravery and service, he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and Combat Infantryman Badge.
